Bullets, etc., along Catoma Ck near Montgomery?

Hello all,
A friend of mine grew up in Montgomery, and he said he used to go play along Catoma Creek, and along a certain area he used to find a lot of minie balls along both banks. He said they were just sticking up out ot the bank or just laying there exposed by rains, etc.. Does anyone know of any activity along that creek south of Montgomery? I know that Gen James H. Wilson's Cav. Corps came to Montgomery after his troops fought at and burned Selma and the Mayor of Montomery met him at Catoma Creek with the key to the city. But that was at another point on Catoma Creek than where these bullets were found. I went out the road to where it crossed the creek near that spot, and it is too over grown and snaky(and possibly alligatory). I will wait until winter and loss of foliage before I go out there with my detector.
Anyway, any ideas as to why there would be a lot of bullets along that creek south of Montgomery would be appreciated.
Take care,
Dave
