It was reported that either the Confederate troops or some local townspeople burned the cotton stores along the river when Wilson began his march towards Montgomery to prevent Union capture and sale of this commodity...almost burned the town, several fire brigades had to be called out to battle the flames. You would suspect that the same may have been thought about the arsenal factories and their supplies. Could there have been large caches of ammo and weapons carried east out of town and hid along the route to Columbus? However with Wilson approaching from the west, I would think that any ammunition stores found near Catoma Creek to the South or West of the city would have been escaping from Selma. And what about the Home Guards? Reckon any of these Home Guard organizations had ammo & weapons stored around the houses and businesses to help in their defense of the cities and towns if one day needed?
