Hayes Lowe
Blount's 5th Ala. Batt.

"By special order to that effect, Co. I Eighteenth Regiment of Alabama Volunteers was blended with Captain Thomason's Company of Lieut. Colo. Blount's Fifth Alabama Battalion on April 26, 1862. By this blending 71 men were added to the Muster Roll of the company." (Comp I)

In light of the information that Jim has provided:

"Blount's - On December 27, 1861, members enlisted for twelve months service at Ashville, Alabama. Serving as Company A, Blount’s 5th Alabama Infantry Battalion, the command was dissolved on April 28, 1862. Officers and men merged with others from Company G to form Company L, 18th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Reforming on March 2, 1863, they later served as Company A, 9th Alabama Infantry Battalion and later Company A, 58th Alabama Infantry Regiment."

I must conclude that one of the transcribers misread what he was transcribing. That is either the transcriber misread "I" of "L", or vice versus. The old-time script I and L look very much alike.

Furthermore, in light of this information:

"...my GGUncle stated that he was "captured at Kingston GA in 1863,...paroled but not exchanged about April 24th, '63 in Louisville and remained in Indiana until the war was over." He applied in 1916, and may have been mixed up on the dates, for I cannot find that the army was near Kingston GA in the spring of 1863."

it looks like you may also have to look at the whereabouts of Company A of the 9th to see where they were around this time. [It appears to me that they were at Manassas and Yorktown during this time, though.] However, the 18th may have been in the Rome/Cartersville area during this time, as they participated at the Battle of Chickamauga (Sept 19-20, 1863) and Lookout Mt. (November 24, 1863). It was in Mobile until April, when it probably moved to Tullahoma, but that still give time within the month to have been in Georgia, and for you soldier to have been captured.

Keep in mind, though, that as you point out, he *may* not have been with the 18th as a member of the sharpshooters or he may have been on detached duty.
