Jim,
If you will look at way that Forrest fought (particularly at Brice's Cross Roads) I think that you will have your answer. Forrest, not having the disadvantage of a formal military education was forced to improvise. To use his words "when I fought one of them fellers that fought by note I generally had him whipped before he pitched the tune"!
Unfortunately his ability and genius were not recognized early enough to affect the ultimate outcome.
Another way that the horrendous casualties could have been avoided (at least on the Confederate side) would have been to switch totally to guerrilla tactics. John Mosby's command inflicted dozens of casualties (killed wounded and captured) on the enemy for every man they lost.
