that was not the original question. Here it is again, "...what might have been an alternative tactic(s) for the Civil War era armies to use to negate the effect of rifled weapons?"

I think that Forrest's tactics did indeed negate the effect of the rifled small arms.

Whether the widespread use of these tactics would have affected the outcome of the war is a different question, but certainly an interesting question.
