There appears to be a mismatch of company names and company designations. "Bartow Avengers" was a popular company name in the weeks following the First Battle of Manassas, especially in Georgia. The company which joined the 17th Alabama by that name was from Lowndes County, so there must have been another company by that name from Cherokee County.
Smith D. Hale helped to organize a regiment in that part of the state, and may be the gentleman in question. Several companies were recruited in Cherokee County during that time. I'm not familiar with a company by that name from Cherokee County, but would like to learn more about it.
