Dan Cashin
8th Alabama Soldier

Hello All

I am looking for details on a Mobile soldier held at Fort Delaware and later KIA at Gettysburg. His name was John Cashin and he was an 25 year old Irish immigrant. He joined the 8th Alabama, (Co.I and H) in 1861. In the US census on 1860 he is listed as a "Bayman". He was captured at Seven Oaks, transferred to Fort Delaware and relesed several months later. He was wounded at Chancellorsville and killed on the third day at Gettysburg.

I would like to know what a "Bayman" was and if there are any sources of information on his unit available. He was listed as living in the 4th or 5th Ward of Mobile. Is there a possibility of him being buried in Mobile?

I have collected a list of over 200 8th Alabama troops held at Fort Delaware if anyone is interested.

Thanks in advance.
Daniel John Cashin
