A "bayman" was a person who made their living in the bay by raking oysters, fishing, shrimping, waterfowling or a combination of these. “Waterman" would be synonymous.

Co. I of the 8th Ala was nicknamed the Emerald Guard and had 104 of 109 Irish born.
Their Co. Flag included the Gaelic mottoes ERIN GO BRAGH!" (Ireland Forever!) and "FAUGH A BALLAGH!" (Clear the way)
