There is a Canoe Creek in south Alabama near Brewton, but this could in no way be described as close to Birmingham. The best possibility is Canoe Creek northwest of Ashville. The two branches (Big and Little Canoe) run roughly Southeast to tie together near Williams and on to the the Coosa River (South of Rainbow City). Supposedly the Creek Indian Village of Littafatchee was near the headwaters of Big Canoe Creek and was burned by Gen'l. John Coffee during the first Creek War. Jackson did have some cannon with him but nothing as big as you describe. The nearest Civil War action was probably the skirmish at Greensport (Southeast of Ashville) on the Coosa River or further north at Gadsden.
