They did get into a real slugfest with Lytle's Brigade, at extremely close range, pistol shot distance, and were very bloodied by it and their later attack on Snodgrass Hill. But a lot of the wounded they suffered were able to get back in time for Missionary Ridge, so they were reduced but not as terribly as it might seem, also there really isnt a term for half brigade other than reduced brigade strength. Legion is a whole different animal, more similar to a regiment. I drove by Lytle Hill today and it can give you chills to think about what a fight occured on its slopes.
