Fun with numbers. ; )

First, the exact number reported as wounded was 578 wounded. 1/3 of this is 192.

I arrive at almost the same number that you do:

398 KIA (not including the 39th)
192 (approx., see above) wounded and didn't return
21 KIA for the 39th (using the 4.5 ratio)

611 Total not returning.

150 not with the regiment at Chicamauga but returning in time for Missionary Ridge (your approximation, but seems too large to me...that's almost 10%)

461 net loss.

1730-461=1269.

In support of the 40% figure, I offer this from Dr. Jones' page: "After Murfreesboro, Deas received his Brig. Gen'l commission, 13 December 1862, and he took command of Franklin Gardner's brigade (19th, 22nd, 25th, 39th, and 26th-50th AL Regiments). The brigade fought at Chickamauga and routed Sheridan's Division, killing Brig. Gen'l W. H. Lytle and capturing 17 cannon. Deas lost 40% of his own command but also led the brigade at Chattanooga and Missionary Ridge. "
