Sharon ShumateMcCleskey/NicholsSun Mar 18 18:40:39 2001 Elderly relatives indicate that g-g-g-grandfathers John Louis McCleskey and Green J. Nichols fought in the Civil War. Both were in Sulligent, Lamar Co., AL, in the 1860 census. Shortly after that, John L. McCleskey moved to Cherokee in Colbert Co., AL.; Green Nichols remained in Sulligent until his death around 1880. John McCleskey may have worked as a wagon driver, since he was a freighter at other times in his life. The elderly relative relating his story tells of an old gun John McClesky is supposed to have carried during the war and brought home when he returned after the war. The elderly relative relating the story of Green Nichols says he served in the 19th AL cavalry and tells the usual story that he was at least a captain and most certainly was being considered for a general when the war ended. It is likely Green Nichols, if he served, would have been an officer, given his economic status in the community; however, if he served, he would have been between 40-50, having been born about 1820. I have researched all the internet records I can find for units in that part of AL but have found no information to suggest either of these men served in the Civil War. It is my hope someone with access to other records may be able to find their names where I could not. Any information appreciated.
