A couple of companies which intially camped with Mitchell's 34th Ala. eventually joined the 45th Ala. Inf. Regt. Black's Company was one of those. Here are a few notes on that unit:

Company “D” of Russell County, 45th Ala. Inf. Regt.

Capt. Caswell B. Black. Resigned October 15, 1862, because of old age and poor physical condition.
Capt. A. W. G. Torbert. Promoted Captain [December 5, 1862,] to rank October 15, 1862. Wounded at Chickamauga, Georgia, September [19,] 1863, and near Atlanta, Georgia, July 22, 1864.

Enlisting at Society Hill, Alabama, March 10, 1862, this company mustered at Loachapoka, Alabama, April 4, 1862. On Apr. 9-10, 1865, survivors united with those of Companies “B” and “G” to form Company “B”, consolidated 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Perhaps you should be looking in the 45th Ala. Of course Capt. Welch's company was Co. "A", 34th Ala. Do you know where these men lived in 1860? Anything about where they lived after the war. Any pension applications. Where did you find the information you have about them?
