As far as I have found, there were only two higher educational institutions at Selma during this period. They were actually the same institution, just that one was for males and one for females. These were Summerfield Male Institute and Summerfield Female Institute, located just outside Selma. The two campuses were located on the top of two hills with a valley separating them.

I have seen nothing to indicate that the male college was a military college, but neither have I seen anything to indicate that it was not. I surmise, though, that all male colleges in Alabama were "military" in nature during the war.
