At least until 1860, the male part of this college was known as Centenary Institute, as it was a Methodist funded college. And, at least by 1865, it was no longer a Methodist college. As long as it was a Methodist college, I doubt that it would have been a military based curriculum.

One of the main men behind the founding of the college was Philip J. Weaver of Selma, who was said at the
time to have been the "richest man in South Alabama". [His son was Confederate veteran William Minter Weaver.] In 1865, he was able to take over ownership of the school due to its debt.
