Well, the mystery deepens. Charles Boyd's _The Devil's Den_ (a history of the regiment) mentions a 3rd Cpl. W. H. McElroy who was 32 when he enlisted and who was killed at The Wilderness (May 64). Then there is private William McElroy (no middle initial listed) who enlisted at age 19(!) and who was a cotton mill operator. Do either of these match your information?
