Don't wait on me....

I'm a bit embarrassed. I've learned a great deal by reading other people's posts on this message board, but there's much I don't know. One of several areas about which I know little happens to be how these cards were created. Over the years I've noted that the copyist's name will appear along with the numbers you mentioned. I can only guess that they were part of a card indexing system which meant something to workers involved in the project but nothing at all today. I.e., George's suggestion has just as much validity as mine or most of the other message board respondents. I'm sure you meant no disrespect. In the future please email me if you really want my response; I prefer not to clutter the board when I know little or nothing about the topic in question.

I'm happy to try and offer help with location of Alabama Confederate ancestors and interpretation of service records. People often have questions about where an ancestor's unit served and what it did during the war. I can usually help there and offer historical trivia from time to time. That's about it.

Another suggestion. I've attended a lecture conducted by a gentleman responsible for the collection at Wallace State College. Aside from having the largest collection of Confederate microfilm in the area, he also knew far more about how to access and use military records from NARA than anyone else I know. Perhaps someone can respond with his name and email address at Wallace State. I'm only good with names if the person in question happens to be dead.
