Alan J. PittsNever there....Tue Mar 13 08:50:21 2001 The 18th alabama never served near Vicksburg. It was serving in Tennessee during the Vicksburg Campaign. Perhaps you meant some other unit. I would be willing to look up your ancestor's name if you would offer it.Alabama infantry units at Vicksburg were the 20th, 23rd, 30th, 31st and 46th regiments of Garrott's Brigade; the 37th, 40th (7 cos.)and 42nd regiments of Moore's Brigade; detachments of the 27th, 35th and 54th regiments. The few men of the last-named three who surrendered at Vicksburg were probably there because(1) they had been cut off from their commands at Champion's Hill and were forced to retreat with Pemberton's main body, or (2) they were either patients or medical personnel assigned to a hospital at Vicksburg, or (3) they had been assigned to serve with either the quartermaster or commissary department at Vicksburg, or (4) they were assigned to provost guard duty at Vicksburg.
