Company A of the 1st Ala. Cav. was formed in 1861 in Autauga County. Although Autauga is two counties away from Perry County, it is only about 5 miles away at its closest point.

Company A later became Company D. I'm guessing that this was at the end of a one year enlistment period, with the regiment being re-organized at that time. It was very common for a regiment to lose many men to other regiments when their initial one year enlistment was up.

Note that the original Company F became Company A. But it was formed of men from counties nowhere near Perry, so "New" A is not a likely prospect for your soldier.

The 44th had several companies formed in counties near or bordering Perry County. I think that it is likely that the soldier in the 1st Cav. is the same soldier, enlisting later, with the 44th.

Complete service records may prove or disprove this possibility. Also see his pension record (if any), and the 1907 Veterans Census of Alabama if he was alive and living in Alabama at that time.
