How to order service records....

For instructions on how to obtain CSR's (compiled service records), see this URL:

Take special note of accessing form 80 via email. Since you want the letter, specify that you want copies of ALL papers in the file jacket under your ancestor's name.

I did not see a physical description of Evan M. Floyd. Have you asked for pension records from the ADAH in Montgomery? If not, that could prove most useful.

If you contact them, ask them to search the 23rd Battalion file based on the 1907 veterans census. Archives staff placed copies of all 1907 census entries in folders based on the unit(s) cited by the veteran. If they were living in Alabama at that time, information that could be helpful to you might be on those census forms. If you request this, be very descriptive; you might even copy this part of the message. There's so much there that even staff don't always recognize your request, and most patrons don't know to ask for these kinds of things.

The National Archives microfilm collection, titled "Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers who Served in Organizations from the State of Alabama", [microcopy no. M311], is the microfilm set you may want to reference on Form 80. You want to ask for reels 301 (23rd Alabama Battalion) and 486 (Hilliard's Legion). Be sure to reference both Hilliard's Legion and the 23rd Battalion in your request since you want CSRs from both units.

Good luck!
