Thanks to your board, I now know more on my GGGrandfather, who served with the 6th Alabama Infantry and entered as a '3rd Colonel'. What differentiated the individuals entering as privates from those entering as lower level officers in the south? What might it have been that cause his immediate rank of 3rd colonel? What duties might belong to the rank specifically of a 3rd colonel? Thank you.
