Henry Seale
3RD Colonel? or 3RD Corporal?
Thu Mar 1 22:57:01 2001

I must inform you that there is and was no such rank or position in the C.S. or U.S. Army as "3RD Colonel". There was a position of 3RD Corporal.

An infantry company was organized with 1 Captain, 1 1ST Lieutenant, 1 Second Lieutenant, 1 jr. Second Lieutenant (sometimes refered to as 3RD Lieutenant -- with the actual rank of 2ND Lt.), 1 1ST Sergeant (sometimes refered to as an orderly sergeant), 4 Sergeants (ranked by position as 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, but pay and insignia the same for 2nd through 5th), 4 Corporals (ranked by position as 1st,2nd,3rd, and 4th, but pay and insignia the same for all corporals, and a minimum of 62 privates as per regulations. Of course as time went on these numbers were reduced due to wounds, sickness, deaths, etc.

What is the source of your information? You have certainly been misinformed. Please post the name of this soldier and I will try and find how he is listed in Broadfoot's roster for you.
