My theory is the same as yours, that he was exempted in some regard, but voluteered anyway. Before declaring that, I wanted to be sure that I was understanding the situation correctly.

As to representing these units as 'active', I also agree. On the otherhand, they are a part of Confederate military history, and deserve both exploration and, in my opinion, similar honor as the non-combative Cadet Corps. Keep in mind that around 1900, the SCV granted the entire Cadet Corps (both combative and non-combative) full rights as Confederate Veterans in the SCV.

I don't say this because John J. Lowe was a relative of mine, he was not. He is simply a man that I keep running across as I research my own Lowe family. [John J. Lowe seems to have been everywhere in the mid-1860's!]
