McGehee-Battle of 7 pines
Mon Feb 26 09:50:30 2001

I have tried in vain to locate my Great Great Grandfather, Fabin Everett McGehee (Marriage record shows F. Everett McGehee-misread in one alt source as J. Everett McGehee). He was born in Dallas, Texas (1838 if it's relevant) Married in Perry, Ga. in 1856, and is buried in Opelika, Ala. Some members of his wife's family lived in Hawkinsville, Ga during and after his married lifetime, and I can not discount his possible residency there subsequent to his marriage. I have no clue as to which state he volunteered in, or where he resided between the markers given related to his birth, marriage, and death places.
I have searched best i can in ALL states above mentioned. I find nothing on him.
I do know he lost his arm at the battle of 7 pines. This must mean something to you experts....as it hones down the possibilites some, i would think.
The counties relevant to Georgia are complicated as I understand, further impeding my search.
From what I understand, regarding Georgia and the counties releavant, Peach County (Perry relevant)was formed July 18, 1924 from Houston and Macon Counties and Pulaski County (Hawkinsville relevant) was formed Dec.13, 1808 from Laurens County and Wilkinson Counties. Houston County was formed in 1821 from Indian lands.
The county for Opalika, Ala, currently is Lee, butI have searched for the units associated with Lee county, and found no entry for that county at the source. I suspect therefore that Lee was formed from some previous county(ies) subsequent to the war...alternately, the online site I accessed may not have been complete, but it certainly appeared so.
He had been an artist, and as a result of his war injury, became a photographer, setting up shop in Opalika (currently Lee county) Ala. He may not have mustered in Ala at all, perhaps it was Ga, or perhaps Texas, as I have explained above.
If anyone can help me, i would be indebted. Do ANY of you have access to the complete files for those serving on CD Rom I understand exist?
As an aside, I am a Gettysburg Native (6th Generation) although not residing there now. This Great Great Grandfather and his role is very important to me. I did not know of his existence until this last year. I want desperately to know more of him, and he is so very, very hard to track. He lost his arm, I don't want to lose the rest of him.
