5th District Supporting Force

Thanks for finding this Alan! This confirms some of the theories that I had developed concerned the "5th District Supporting Force, Allen's Company". Namely, that it was formed to support the conscript officer, and that it was part of the Alabama State Reserve forces.

Noteworthy is that this company had 18 enlisted men at surrender, plus two commissioned officers (A Capt. and a 2nd Lt.). It was surrendered at Citronelle. (I think that the company was actually physically located in Columbus, Miss. at the time of surrender.

There is some indication that the 5th District force was actively engaged near the end of the war, joining (or working in concert with) Gen. Wirt Adam's Cavalry.

As a sidenote, most of the men of the 5th District force have possible matches at the Talladega Camp of Instruction, which makes sense. Most or all *also* have possible matches in Dr. Robert O. Perrin's Regiment of Mississippi Cavalry. That seems strange on it's face, but Dr. Perrin was a practicing physician in Pickens County before the war. It is unknown if he recruited in Pickens County, but he undoubtedly passed through Pickens County on his way from Tuscaloosa (where he was previously a member of Lumsden's Battery) to Noxubee County, Miss, where he recruited the first company of what later became a regiment.
