Check map 21 on Alabama Atlas and Gazetter, available at www.delorme.com, which shows Ider between Flat Rock and Valley Head. You might also note the map produced by the National Park Service at this URL:

To be a little more precise, I'd want to check the USGS quad map for Mentone, which should show Winston's Gap and other locations you mention. You might also look at the detail maps in the back of the Official Atlas of the Civil War. I'm guessing, but it appears that Winston's Gap may exist near Valley Head, Ala., and that Alpine, Ga., is today called Menlo. Note also that Broomtown Valley runs from La Fayette, Ga. to Round Mountain (near Centre), Ala., SW<===>NE.
