Lowe enlisted in Capt. E. D. Tracy's Co. I, 4th Ala. Inf. Regt. and was wounded at Manassas. The Secretary of War discharged him from service in December 1861 and Lowe 'disappeared' for the next two years. He's a student, age 21, 6 ft. tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, fair hair. He reappears with Clanton when that officer arrived in north Alabama in April of 1864. Entries in the miscellaneous records show that 'Lt.Col.' Wm. M. Lowe of the 13th Ala. Cav. was captured at Whitesburg, Ala., Mar. 15, 1865, and released under $2000 bond at Fort Delaware on June 6, 1865.

None of this applies to the original query, but I hope someone else found it interesting.
