Covington County

The State Archives has a county folder for Covington which includes nine muster rolls. The State Archives is going to be the ONLY source for most of the militia companies Homer referenced. The Archives also has an card index of Alabama soldiers which you should check.

Several years ago a helpful archivist brought me an interesting file. It seems that in early March 1862 Governor Shorter sent a circular to each county requiring a count of men enrolled in Confederate service and the name of each military unit. The file included counties A-M except Mobile (they must have been overwhelmed by this order). The other counties must be in another file that couldn't be located. I certainly would love to see it. Bear in mind this is not a complete list of all Confederate units; just those which existed prior to passage of the Conscription Act.

I have photocopies of many counties; in some cases (like DeKalb) I made notes. Covington being a small county, I recall the sheriff's reply including statements like, twenty men joined Captain Smith's Company from Butler County. There may well have been references to a Florida company or two. If you're interested, I can locate that over the holiday and list those references.
