Alan, thanks for all the information. You obviously have been at this a while and I certainly appreciate the help. I thought I would ask you to go ahead and check on that John W. Balkom. We have found our William J. Balkom in the 1860 and 1870 Covington County Censuses. In the 1860 he is listed as William Ballom age 37 but the family members are correct and in the 1870 he is listed as William J. Baulcom and again the family members are correct. It is not unusual for us to encounter a number of spellings of this name even for a single individual over time. I do not have a record that reflects the other names you provided but will send other Balkom researchers to your message in case it may help others. Thanks again.
