Doug Croley
23rd Alabama Infantry - John Croley

I am looking for information on my ancestor, John Croley (also spelled Crowley), whose widow, Mary Dykes Croley of Escambia County, AL, filed an application 2/July/1887 for relief stating that he died a member of Co. D, 23rd Alabama Infantry CSA. John Croley was said to have died of illness in the Mobile, AL area - or somewhere along the Florida - Alabama Railroad line. He may have been living in the Brooklyn, AL area during the early 1860's and may even have been hired as a subsitute for some other soldier. Any information that would show John Croley as having been a member of the 23rd or some other unit would be most appreciated. Relief payments were made to his wife, Mary Croley as follows:

July 22, 1887 Escambia County, AL File #1908:
Date Unknown Escambia County, AL File #1761;
April 27, 1895 Coffee County, AL File #1722.

Special Note: John Croley's son also named "John Croley" homesteaded land near Roberts, AL in Escambia County, AL southside of the Conecuh River. Later he moved to Coffee County, AL. His mother, Mary Croley, must have been living with him hence the later relief application from Coffee County. Problem is that the Coffee County application shows Mary's husband as a memmber of the 18th Alabama which also lost several men to illness in the Mobile area. Given that Mary was illiterate, I am not sure in just which unit her husband actually served.

Any help in establishing just what Alabama unit John Croley served and/or where he is buried would be most appreciated.
