Well, there is a John Cronley who enlisted in Co. "H" (but not Co. "D", sorry) of the 23rd. This could well be your man, although you would need to check his records to double-check. Remember, "service records" of Confederate soldiers are actually transcriptions of bi-monthly rolls and other documents that mention a soldier's name. And, these "original" documents were created by men who weren't always careful with their handwritten scripts. It's not too much of a stretch to read CRONLEY for CROWLEY (or vice versa). You might also want to contact the AL Dept of Archives and History for any biographical information on Crowley/Cronley.
