White's Cavalry

I've gotten a query about a unit I am unfamiliar with, White's Coast Guard. The query reads:

"During the Civil War, Dr. John Wesley Wood was connected with "White's Cavalry, a coast guard unit, and later with the 12th Alabama Regiment in Virginia. He was in the famous battle before Petersburg where he was taken captive. He served as a surgeon while in prison at Lookout, Maryland until the War's end. I am looking for all the information I can find on "White's Cavalry" and the 12th Alabama Regiment. If you can be of assistance, it would be greatly appreciated."

I can find no record of Dr. Wood, nor any mention of White's Cavalry. Anybody fmiliar with this?
