On March 17, 1862, James White was elected captain of a cavalry command from Choctaw and Washington Counties. This unit served with the 15th Alabama Partisan Ranger Battalion (Boyles)without receiving a letter designation. White's company remained on the Gulf Coast after Boyles' battalion went to northeast Mississippi in early 1863. By that time White had resigned, describing himslef as overage, overweight, and needing to look after a large plantation. Duncan McKellar led the company after White's resignation was accepted on December 27, 1862. The company served with Murphy's Battalion as Company "D" and later with the 15th Confederate Cavalry as Company "K".
