frank McElhenny of Company F, 24th Mass. Inf. deserted from his regiment while it was stationed in North Carolina. He joined a Confederate regiment and deserted from that regiment on July 27, 1864 north of Deep Bottom, Va. Unfortunately for him, the regiment whose lines he entered was the 24th Mass. He was found guilty of desertion and executed on August 8, 1864.

I am trying to find out which Confederate unit he joined. It may have been the 25th Va. Battalion.
