Here's what I have about the Arthurs in the 42nd Va. What additional information, letters, pictures, details of their lives do you have?

ARTHUR, CHARLES EDWARD: Pvt., Co. D. Living, age 10, Campbell County, 1850. 1860 cen., age 20, Castle Craig P.O., Campbell County. Enl. 5/31/61 at Yellow Branch, Campbell County. Present in unit 11/2/61, 12/31/61, 2/28/62, 6/30/62 and 10/31/62. Wd., left hand (ball entered at the back of left hand fracturing the 4th metacarpal bone and exited the palm of the hand causing permanent contraction of the ring and little fingers of left hand), 12/14/62 Fredericksburg. Hospitalized, wound, Richmond 12/17 to 26/62. Hospitalized, wound, Danville 12/27-28/62 to 1/29-30/63 when went AWOL. Hospitalized, chronic bronchitis, Richmond 11/63 to 12/11/63 when released to duty in unit. Captured 5/12/64 Spotsylvania C.H. Point Lookout, Md., 5/18/64 to 8/3/64. Elmira, N.Y., 8/6/64 to 6/16/65 when released on oath. 5' 8", florid complexion, dark hair, blue eyes in 1865. Postwar Campbell County farm worker, 1870, and laborer, 1880. Applied for pension in Campbell County 1/12/88. Died, catarrh, liver disease and pneumonia, 6/1/97 near Bedford Springs, Campbell County, according to widow's 1900 pension application. She also gave a 6/89 date of death in her 1911 application.

911/02/28 Widow, Louisa Francis Arthur, applied for pension in Lynchburg. Married 866/02/07 in Campbell Co. He died, pneumonia complicated with fever and liver complaint, 889/06 in Campbell Co. [42Va: 9c12]

ARTHUR, GEORGE GREENVILLE: Pvt., Co. E. Born Bedford County. Laborer, age 27, Bedford County, 1850. 1860 cen., carpenter, age 35, Cooper's P.O., Franklin County. Prewar cabinet maker. Enl. 6/4/61 at Salem, Roanoke County. Detailed, waiting on sick, by 8/31/61 when absent from unit. Absent from unit detailed "waiting on sick" at Rockbridge Alum Springs hospital by 10/31/61 through 12/5/61. Sick in same hospital by 12/31/61 when absent from unit. Discharged 2/28/62 at Winchester for disability: "paralysis of three years standing." 5' 8", light complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair in 1862. Postwar roster said: "wore specs. Cooked for Capt. D(eyerle) for some time." Postwar Roanoke County cabinet maker, 1870-1880.

ARTHUR, THOMAS FRANKLIN: Pvt., Co. K. Born Franklin County. Living, age 11, Franklin County, 1850. 1860 cen., age 22, Franklin County. Enl. 6/17/61 at Rocky Mount, Franklin County. Present in unit 10/31/61, 12/31/61 and 2/28/62. KIA 3/23/62 Kernstown. Some records say he did not die of wounds until 9/8/62, but this seems unlikely. Buried Mount Hebron Stonewall Confederate Cem., Winchester. Family did not know of his burial location, but erected a marker in his name in the Arthur/Edwards family cem. in Franklin County. The Arthur cemetery is located about 500 yards behind the Old Arthur home place at John Arthur Rd., which is off State Route 658, Listening Hill Road.
