OS Fitzhugh at Bloody Angle

I recently found an article written 8-15-1903 quoting my Great Grandfather Oscar Stuart Fitzhugh of the 13th Va Infantry speaking to the Fredricksburg Newspaper about the Lee to the rear story at the Bloody Angle. He states that Lee and Gordon said they would have to withdraw if the lines were not retaken. There were three lines of battle to be retaken. As they reached the second line of battle he is quoted as saying "it was blackgum (gun) against thunder,Virginian against Virginian. Here we captured two stands of colors -Virginia colors -then we went on to the third brestworks".This is not a long article and that is not explained.

Could any one explain what he meant by Virginian against Virginian ? West Virginian perhaps? I can email article to anyone interested. Many thanks.
Berry Fitzhugh
