Re: Fleming Saunders, 42nd Virginia

Saunders also wrote a letter on 9 July from Williamsport to his brother about the fight: "I was in the fight on the 6th. A large force of Yankee cavalry attempted to capture our wagon train at this place. The teamsters were armed and turned out. I was in command of about two hundred, and we were under a very hot fire. Of the number six were killed & a good many wounded. I don’t think we did the enemy much harm, but we advanced upon them & drove their sharp shooters from behind a fence." This letter is also in the Va. Historical Society. He has a rather extensive collection of letters that can be found not only at the Virginia Historical Society, but also U.Va. A good account of the waggoners fight at Williamsport on 6 July can be found in Retreat from Gettysburg, Kent Masterson Brown.
