Thornton Crawford - Botetourt County

Good morning and Merry Christmas!

Yesterday, I came into possession of a letter written by a "Thornton L. Crawford" on April 30, 1862 from White Sulphur Springs. The letter mentions "we are in campe at the white sulphur. We came here last sunday and we are ordered to Bonsacks Depo. Reporte says we had a hard March the day that we left campe Buckner it rained...excuse this bad riting I was on guard last night and I am so sleapy I canot keepe my eyes open." He ends it with a PS "I have bene triing to hier a subsistitute. They are very hie here I tried to get one last Sunday and he asked me Eleven Hundred Dollars!"

I'm thinking this letter is written from Virginia (White Sulphur Springs) and the Thornton L. Crawford that signed the letter is the same one who died on May 27, 1862 in Botetourt County, Virginia (Virginia Death and Burial Index). However, I cannot find his name in any Civil War records of Virginia. Judging by the contents of the letter, he was in service and looking to hire a substitute. I'm hoping someone may be able to shed some light on who this individual was, and most importantly, what unit he was with. Thanks!
