Re: 16th VA Cavalry
In Response To: 16th VA Cavalry ()

I have some questions about this regiment as well.

My great great grandfather, William E. Thompson, is listed as being a member, Co. G on the records at Finn's Point National Cemetery. He died at Ft. Delaware. His pay records on Footnote/Fold 3 list CO. K, 15th Cavalry.

I'm not sure if the two, both under the command of Jeb Stuart, were consolidated, or he volunteered to transfer... his pay records end April, 1863, and seem to be for 2 month periods. The 16th was at Gettysburg, and most of the prisoners at Ft. Delaware were from Gettysburg, per the Fort Delaware website. But, his time in the 16th would have been limited, in terms of non-POW service.

I haven't been able to find much info on either group, quite honestly.

His wife died many years after, and never filed a pension. She did in KY, but since that was literally a stone's throw from Wayne County (across the river), moving means nothing.

So, were members of the 15th officially assimilated into the 16th? What records exist?

Thanks.
