Mounted Combat at Five Forks Account #2

testimony of william wells commanding 2nd brigade, Custer's Division

Q. Did you meet with any resistance in your movement around the enemy's flank ?—A. We met resistance after getting around upou their flank—after moving some distance.
Q. Do you recollect whether you moved through woods, or a field, in getting around upon their flank ?—A. We were in woods. We moved out of the woods through a field.
Q. This resistance that you met with, was it from iufantry or cavalry ?—A. From cavalry.
Q. What was the nature of the resistance ?—A. We met mounted cavalry.
Q. How long did that resistance continue?—A. Some little time; we charged and were partially repulsed, but rallied again and drove the enemy finally.

Q. Please look at Cotton Map No. 3 and indicate, If you can, about what direction you took in your final charge?—A. the balance of the command moved iu a direction off toward the left, northwest; and we moved across the country, a portion of which was very rough indeed; and we crossed, I recollect very distinctly, a ditch; I do not know whether there was water in the ditch or not, but it was very rough. I was moving my command in column of battalions. Of course the battalions were very small; and I found very hard work to keep them iu column, and had to break them into fours in order to get across some of those places. This regiment, I speak of more particularly, was the First Vermont, which was held iu reserve. We moved around in rear of the enemy's works [witness points to the letter V] I should judge somewhere iu this vicinity and faced east. I should judge, or southeast, perhaps, and in this vicinity [witness indicates north of the northwest corner of the Gilliam fieldj we met the enemy's cavalry mounted in quite strong force. We drove them back some distance, and they rallied and drove us back; aud this regiment, the First Vermont, I kept in reserve until I thought they were going to repulse us and drive us back. Then the First Vermont was ordered to charge, and Capebart's brigade and the balance of my brigade rallied on the First Vermont, when the First Vermont charged. Finally they drove the enemy and we followed them for some time.
