Diary of Gen. James H. Wilson July 29 & 31, 1864

Friday July 29, 1864

Moved out to (illegible) house near Plank Road. Rec'd orders for concentration of division in accordance with orders from Army Hd. Qrs. drawing in all pickets and patrols north of the Black Water except for one regiment at Prince George C.H.

Rec'd communication from A.A.H. (Maj. Gen. Andrew A. Humphreys, Meade's Chief of Staff) saying that cavalry corps would move to Lee's Mill and directing me to send an officer to communicate with General Sheridan for orders.

Sunday July 31,1864
Resumed position on picket line. Was ordered yesterday to prepare for a movement in conjunction with a corps of infantry against the railroad, countermanded this morning. 1st Div. of Cavalry ordered to Washington & our movement countermanded. Chapman ordered to relieve 2nd Div. at Lee's Mill.

Rec'd note from Bowers (Grant's staff and wilson's friend) expressing great disgust at the failure of the attack yesterday. Genl. Grant went to Fort Monroe this morning.
