Re: George Washington Custis Lee

Dear Amy,

How nice of you to respond to my posts, especially as they are quite dated now. I have never lost my interest in Custis Lee, and have searched high and low for any information that might be hidden in books and diaries and letters either from or to him or about him. He certainly covered his tracks well. Aside from a few letters relating to his post-war career, not much is known about his pre-war career, except for his postings and duties as an engineer. In the biographies of his father and even in the diary of his sister Agnes, as well as Perry's book about Mary Lee and Couling's The Lee girls, the basic facts are all the same. Yates biography does nothing to reveal the man himself. Perhaps that is what I find so compelling. WShat woman doesn't love a handsome, brilliant enigma to try to figure out. There are several of us out in the great wide world who have reached out to each other to compare our knowledge and opinions of Custis and of course the rest of the family. If you would like to E-mail me, we can compare knowledge and perhaps add to each other's perceptions of this man. I am always glad to communicate with anyone who is interested in Custis. Regards, Judi McParland
