Historical marker A23 on Route 11, near Tom's Brook, VA (Shenandoah County), is located close to where LTC Alexander "Sandie" Pendleton was mortally wounded at the battle of Fisher's Hill, 22 September 1864. The question is "how close"? Of the accounts of the battle and this invaluable young staff officer (including W.G. Bean's biography on Pendleton), none seems to give the exact spot.
