A resident of Pike County, he enlisted on 14 March 1862 and was mustered into the Company A "Confederate Guards" of the 13th Georgia Infantry as a Private. John lost his life 5 May 1864 in the Battle of The Wilderness.
There is some conjecture that this man was Pvt. J.P. Marshall of Company A, and a headstone is marked as such. However, this is incorrect due to the fact that Pvt. Marshall survived the war and was surrendered at Appomatox.
The Spotsylvania Confederate Memorial Association’s Cemetery Ledger lists this man as “J.P.M. (W?), A 13 GA”. Pvt. Wright is most likely this fallen soldier, but not an absolute certainty.
