Quinine

I am researching my g.g. grandfather who supposedly smuggled quinine during the Civil War. Is anyone aware of a available research on this subject? I am especially interested to know about smuggling routes that went through New York. In one account my g.g. grandfather said very specifically that "New York City was a place of visitation on many occasions ... he crossed the Hudson on the ferry from Jersey City to the opposite slip at Courtland Street. His visits on these occasions would be for the purpose of buying quinine, price $140 a pound, and place of purchase, a cellar on Fifth Avenue. The drug would reach the dealer there via Canada. ... It was his custom to buy 40 pounds at a time and place the pellets in a pair of old saddle bags ... " Any information or advice about where to locate information on this subject would be greatly appreciated. I am happy to forward the full article if anyone cares to read it.
