Okay I'm, trying to solve a mystery. The Smithsonian opened Lincoln's watch last week and found an unexpected message or name, "Jeff Davis". The same looking hand writing etched "L. E. Gross Sept. 1, 1864. I believe I've indentified L. E. Gross but I need to know if the following men survived the Civil War.

Joseph and William H. Gross of the 16th Virginia Cavalry Regiment.
Willima H. Gross of the 42nd Virginia Infantry Regiment.

L. E. Gross' brothers Joseph and William H, died in 1907 and 1898 respectfully.
