John Henry Allen 42nd Va and Served with Forrest
I am trying to clarify the service of John Henry Allen, a native of Baldwyn, Mississippi, born in March 1844 as the son of David M. and S.A. Allen who was a student in Virginia when the war broke out. He enlisted in H/42Va Infantry in 1861, rose to the rank of Sgt. Major and was wounded at Cross Keys in June 1862. Due to the disability from the wound he was discharged in August 1862. I have come across a 1912 biographical sketch of Allen in "The Book of St. Louisans" that says that after recovering from his Cross Keys wound, Allen served under General Nathan Bedford Forrest for the remainder of the war. The Soldiers and Sailors System lists a James H. Allen as a member of Forrest's Scouts, 9th Tenn. Cav, and 4th Tenn Cav., and there is a J.H. Allen in the 1st Regt. Mississippi Cav. Can anyone help me pin down what service James Henry Allen had with Gen. Forrest?
