The Virginia in the Civil War Message Board

23rd VA Volunteer Regiment of Infantry

This is to notify the board of the following website of Living Historians, whose goal it is to continue with the formal work started by Mssrs. Thomas Rankin and David Seay, in researching and honoring the original soldiers of the 23rd Virginia Volunteer Regiment of Infantry.

Mr. Rankin's Book of the Virginia Regimental Series, 23rd Virginia Infantry published by H.E. Howard has been an immense guide in researching the 23rd VA, but we now find ourselves searching beyond this wonderful reference for more information. As such, we have also collected 29 images of 23rd Virginia soldiers (some previously published, but many not formally published at this time).

In late May of 1861, the 23rd Virginia Infantry Regiment was organized and began a program of drill and instruction at Camp Lee, located on the "New" Fairgrounds (presently in 2008, this location stands behind the Science Museum of Virginia, Richmond:, before transferring to Camp Laurel Hill (now located near Beckley, WV).

We're always anxious to assist in family members reconnecting with their past, as well as collecting/sharing "new" information on the original men of the 23rd VA; letters, diaries, newspaper articles, images, relics...etc.

Please if we can be of any help whatsoever, please do not hesitate to contact me:
