Do you know if John Mangus served at Gettysburg? He is listed as a 4th Corporal in a roster of the Dixie Grays (Company E, 42nd Virginia) compiled by the Virginia Writers' Project and published in Roanoke, Story of County and City. A William Mangus is listed as a Private. The book on the regiment, written by John D. Chapla, and published by H. E. Howard, Inc., lists six casualties of the company at Gettysburg. The 42nd was the right center regiment in Jones' Brigade and I figure would have advanced against the steepest part of Culp's Hill on its north side about 1930 hours on the evening of 2 July, just in front of the large 7th Indiana regiment, with some fire contributed from the right of the Iron Brigade where the 6th Wisconsin was posted (on the immediate left of the 7th Indiana), and the small 56th Pennsylvania (on the right of the 7th Indiana). But owing to its strength and position the 7th Indiana would likely have inflicted the bulk of the casualties on the 42nd Virginia. The 7th was fresh, having missed the first day's battle, and occupied a commanding elevated position further strengthened by earthworks. The 42nd never had a chance.
