Captain Philip B. Stanard of Richmond (teacher on the 1860 census) served as a battery commander during the First Battle of Manassas. At that time the Confederate military command was reported as the "Army of the Potomac." However, after General Lee took command in 1862, it became the Army of Northern Virginia.

In 1862 General Gorgas nominated Stanard as a major in the Ordnance Department. At the time he was serving as captain and chief of ordnance on the staff of Major General A. P. Hill, Army of Northern Virginia.

Stanard has two lengthy military service files, one as Captain of the Thomas Light Artillery of Richmond, Va., and another as a major in the Ordnance Department. I don't see any connection to J. E. B. Stuart, a cavalry officer.
